How do we know if our problem is serious enough to need professional counseling? People who see me are often concerned about family or work problems, depression and anxiety, self esteem issues, control or abuse in prior relationships, emotional problems or relationship concerns. If a situation is distressing to you - no matter how "everyday" it may seem - and you aren’t able to resolve it yourself, a professional therapist can help you.
Can psychotherapy really help? Will we just talk about feelings and frustrations? Counseling is a very individualized process and is based on your unique history, patterns of interaction, strengths, and experiences. It takes time and commitment to make significant changes. I will help you set realistic goals, increase your self-understanding, and stick to your plan for change. I will also guide you through the process of learning skills for a stronger relationship if that is your concern. Talking about feelings and frustrations occurs so that you can move forward in a positive way.
What will really happen when we go for counseling? I provide a safe, professional and comfortable environment in which to discuss issues. I take a holistic view (mind, body, and spirit) and tailor sessions to your specific needs. My goals include helping you learn about, express and take action about your concerns; strengthen your relationships with family and others; and find deeper meaning and satisfaction in your life.
How do I know if counseling can help me? If you experience a sense of being understood by your counselor, that’s a good start. Because you are talking about personal concerns you need to feel like you can trust your therapist and that they can help you. Then you’ll have to determine as you go along whether you are making the changes that you want for your life. If not, talk with your therapist or find another one.
